September Newletter
Welcome Back. Wow! Fourth Grade. We are now on the second floor and have a wonderful view of the Maria Regina campus. Our schedule is a busy one! You can find this and other important resources on our Google Classroom.
Over the summer we read Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech. This wonderful novel showed how the main character, Louie overcame many obstacles to accomplish his goal to save a baby donkey. As we embark on this new year with its challenges, we will remember Louie's success came from hard work and believing in himself. We will read another novel in September, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo that shows us the power of friendship. This book will remind how the value of our "school family" and friends in life.
We learn some much by reading, so that is what we will do. Read, read, and read some more. For the school year I would like to challenge each student to a challenge. Read 20 books in our school year '21-'22. We will read some together, we will read some for asignments and we will have some indpendent reading time in school but you must read each and every night. As they say...
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss
As we return to school in Math we will do some review and then start a new math module focusing on place value. The numbers we work with this year are larger but, more important we must make sense of the numbers and their patterns. We will work on rounding numbers and addition and subtraction. We will use Eureka Math, Zearn and Math Centers that are designed for whole group and small group instruction.
In Social Studies we will explore New York State. Our study begins with exploring New York State's geography and highlighting some of our bigger cities and waterways. Each student will make and send me a postcard from one place in the great state of New York that you think I should visit. We will use maps, books and videos to explore and discover why "I Love New York"!
In Science we will be explore science and nature all around us and ask a lot of "I wonder" questions. We will learn about the scientific process and engineering design process that professionals use in studying the real world and Science. Putting this to good use we will have an engineering challnge of our own. Stay tuned.
Most important we will learn about how God is ever present in our lives. We will work on serving him by serving others- in school, at home and in our community. In class we will pray every day. Our lessons will help us understand our Church, our Mass and strengthen our faith. We have much to be thankful for so we will remember to thank God and serve others in small but important ways.
Our Grade 4 School Year Goal:
Read 20 books by June 2022. READY, SET, READ !
