TEST TAKING TIPS

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU DO YOUR

BEST ON ANY TEST.

  1. Pay attention to the directions.  Read all the directions on your test, and listen carefully to any directions your teacher reads to you.  If you do NOT understand some of the directions, ask your teacher to explain them to you.
  2. Read passages, questions, and answer choices carefully.  Read each passage carefully and go all the way through each passage BEFORE you answer any questions.  When you reach the questions, read each question and ALL the answer choices carefully.  DON'T pick an answer BEFORE you've read the ENTIRE question and all the answer choices.
  3. Use key words to find the answer.  Key words in the questions often point to where the answers can be found in the passage.  By learning to identify key words, you'll improve your ability to answer questions quickly and correctly.
  4. Answer EVERY question, even if you have to guess.  If you DON'T know an answer on the test, give it your best guess.  Cross out the answers you know are wrong, and pick from the ones that are left.  Think about it...If you don't answer a question, you can't possibly get it right.
  5. Don't let hard questions upset you.  Some questions might be easy to answer.  Others might seem more difficult.  If you come to a difficult question, don't panic.  Think carefully about what the question is asking.  If it seems too difficult, skip it and go on to another.  Plan to come back later and try to answer the question again.
  6. Use what you know to do your best.  Some people get nervous before they take tests.  If you do, try to remember this:  You probably know more than you think you do.
