The question I get asked most often by parents is, "What can I do to help my child with reading at home?"  My answer always includes the phrase, "READ TO THEM!"
Reading experts list reading aloud as their number one suggestion to parents.  Why?  Reading aloud builds the desire to read and the more children read, the better readers they become.
Once children learn to read, they need to practice reading silently. Students should be encouraged to build their stamina for independent reading.  And remember...independent reading is NOT at the present grade level.  It is 2-3 years BELOW your child's present grade level. When was the last time you read a college level book for PLEASURE? Making education a family affair will strengthen family bonds and improve your child's chances for academic success.
